So you are ready to start writing online. But how do you find brands who would be willing to work with you?

Which platforms should you leverage?

Different things work for different people. All the methods given below are those which I know have worked for me and for my friends.

1. Share it with your circle

Often, someone in your circle might be looking for the service you offer. You just need to catch their attention. This is the easiest way to start.

You don’t need a big audience. The trust is already there. It is the lowest-hanging fruit you can grab.

All you have to do is update your status.

2. Use a platform to market your services LinkedIn/Medium/Fb/Insta

There are many platforms to market your services. The best one, in the current situation, is LinkedIn. This is where professionals hang out and it’s easy to get the word out.

Medium is a good platform too. Most people here are writers, creatives, and those who are looking for original ideas.

Facebook is another amazing platform. However, to market your services here, you need to join the right groups. Reaching out to a new audience organically is very very difficult! But if you get in the right communities, there’s a great chance you’ll find someone who’s looking for your services.

I also know people who have used Instagram to get new clients. At the same time, some preach about Twitter.

The key is to stick to 1–2 platforms to market your services.

3. Create content that your target audience is looking for

Once you decide on a platform, create content that your target audience is looking for. For instance, let’s say you have a background in IT and are looking to work with brands in that domain.

Now think:

  • What are the common pains that this brand faces?
  • How can you help them with your content?

Simple.

This way, you can showcase your expertise. You never know what goes viral and how.

4. Freelancing platforms

Platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr, PeoplePerHour are good to get your foot in the door.

However, there are some drawbacks to this.

It can be incredibly difficult to get work initially. Nobody wants to work with you if you don’t have any reviews. And to get reviews, you need work.

Also, you are subject to the platform’s policies. Here’s one horror story where a business consultant was forced to pay $12,500 to Upwork for something which nobody could have foreseen.

Due to all of this, it could become incredibly difficult to scale your business here.

5. Send cold emails

Cold emails are a numbers game.

Many will reject you. Many won’t get back to you.

But if you get it right, you will land in a place you’d love to work at. I’m a living example of this.

There are many different ways to write a good cold email. The best tip I’d give you is to keep your message concise and show how you can help them.

Conclusion

It will take you time to begin your journey. Don’t get discouraged. Trust takes time.

But once the foundation is built, you’ll find it much easier to find work.

The next step you can take is to select a platform and start right away!
